Frekote Problems (?)

i have used Frekote products in past and have had generally good luck. Recently i have been trying to reuse small models to crank out multiple parts but have found that the part quality seems to get worse each time. Do either of the Frekote products have shelf-lives or do they lose effectiveness? I tried recently to use a spray-in-mold clear (automotive) but it stuck to model and peeled off. I have repolished each time followed by cleaning with was/grease remover and reapplied Frekote per instructions. i thought this stuff knocked it outta the park but am having second thoughts.

Thanks

Frekote has a shelf life. About 1 year once opened I think.

do you know the symptoms? the latest problem was this sticking clear-coat thing/ I used the automotive clear since it’s easier to spray than the other stuff recommended here. I neglected to do a tape test but do knw that it’s hard to get anything to stick when trying to hold down breather, etc.

Frekote is an aerospace product, so like all aerospace products it has an ‘official’ shelf life, it doesn’t really have an actual shelf life. If looked after properly, it will never go off. My gallon tin expired in 2001, it still releases absolutely perfectly.

OK so that is the answer i was looking for. Thanks.

Now since my parts don’t always come of clean , yet some folks get multiple parts from a single application i cannot figure out what i wa doing wrong. i generally don’t spray clear but am careful to polish, clean thoroughly and reapply the 2 Frekote products. I have had parts pop right out of the mold but lately my smaller parts fight me all the way.

Well it can be a bit tricky to diagnose because there can be SO many things that cause it. How have you stored the Frekote? Is it in its original container? Is the container damaged at all? When you’re applying it, do you put the lid back on straight away or do you leave the lid off the container while you apply it? All these things can lead to contamination and accelerated degeneration of the chemical, which will affect its performance. As long as it is in an air-tight container and exposed to air for as short a time as possible when applying it, then the polymer should simply stay suspended in the solvent indefinitely.

The other most common errors I find lead to problems are application errors. Applying the coats too heavy can cause it to perform poorly, as it actually lowers surface tension so much that it won’t stick to itself, it will bead up and then evaporate meaning you actually only get streaks of coverage on your mould surface.

Buffing is another common error, it’s very easy to remove the product by buffing it. You shouldn’t need to buff the surface at all after applying the coating, just wipe it on and let dry and you’re good to go an hour later. If you are getting a residue that you need to buff off, then you’re making a mistake somewhere. Either application is too heavy, your mould isn’t clean, or you aren’t wearing gloves and the solvent is dissolving the grease on your hands and depositing it onto the mould.

How many coats are you applying? How long are you leaving it between coats/prior to applying resins? Is it very warm or very cold when you are applying it?

Thanks Hanaldo for the thoughts - application process seems simple enough - too little/too much???

always been careful to keep lids tight… stored out of sunlight in cool place
2-4 coats… 70 degF … usually wait a day or so (sometimes not) before applying resin

And you’re not buffing it at all?

no buffing - i may wipe down bad streaks but really may wipe lightly once or twice

I would suggest trying more coats. On initial application I always do 5 as an absolute minimum, preferably 8. Then 1 top-up coat between pulls.

I have also found that accidentally leaving the top off overnight will cause the frekote to lose it’s effectiveness.

I have also found that frekote will lose it’s effectiveness if the lid is left off overnight. I buy frekote in pint tins, less air space in the can seems to help.A suggestion would be to consider using TR mold release wax. I have had good results with it.

I get the TR wax from AVT in Indianapolis.

Definitely, you should never leave the lid off, Frekote is very sensitive to moisture. Even just leaving the lid off for 5 minutes while you apply it to your mould will reduce its effectiveness.

no lid off - ever. no buffing. I have followed directions to a T. perhaps time for a new sealer/release.

Yeh, it’s an odd one. There’s no reason for it to go off or fail without something having gone wrong… I’m pretty stumped I must say!

There’s no chance it’s a compatibility issue between the in-mould coating you were using and your tool surface?
