Frekote & Glass

Do any of you use frekote on glass? If so do you just spray it on the clean glass surface without wax? And after a few parts go threw the mold and the frekote was sprayed every time, does it build up a layer so I wont have to spray or put a release on every time?

Thanks and sorry for my ignorance. :frowning:

frekote never goes on top of wax, always a clean surface. Frekote works on glass somewhat. I found the bond with 770 to glass weak and required reapplication.

Will one coat be sufficient?

dunno about glass, but after you follow directions, it should be fine for several pulls…you might have to recoat every so often, but it’s a semi-perm…so it lasts.

By the sounds of it glass is not the popular choice to make sheets. What is the aluminum or steel plates called, caul plate? Where would I even find one and how much are they?
Thanks again I really appreciate everyones help!

How much does Frekote cost?

Rotor: Mcmaster.com, MSC, any metal supplied in the phone book.
24"x24"x3/16 unpolished aluminum is 145$. It will last you forever. Remember that!
Just look up aluminum, go under sheet/bar, and pick the sizes you need. McMaster is freaking amazing. We get our orders next day!!!

Canyon: nfgsales.com No idea how much it is, but they can quote you quickly on it.
NC55 or 700 is common.

Yes I love mcMaster it is almost like a tinker toy store.:stuck_out_tongue: I did look at aluminum plates from them, but I was looking at 1/2+ thickness so the price scared me away. I did not know you could use this thin of plate. Does anyone know where to find one that is at least 4’ x 6’ now? because I see mcmasters is only 24x24"

Canyon - Frekote was $19.75 for a 9.6oz can and $19.99 for 16oz container.

4’x6’?? that is bloody large. Then again, I know they exist since my last job made large honeycoomb panels using frikin’ large plates. Niiiice and heavy.
Sometimes you can get away with a thinner plate, as long as the surface you put the plate on is very flat.
Check your phonebook/google maps for sheet metal places in your area. They might have something large enough for you.

Yep, google aluminum sheet near your local area and start dialing. it won’t be cheap but it will work.

Ok just pulled a 16x16" sheet of carbon/basalt from the glass and WOW does that frekote work good. The nylon peel ply stuck to the carbon more then the glass.

One thing I noticed in the directions on the frekote can. Is it talks about how spray cans can leave a matte finish, which it did. And that you need to polish the surface to get the gloss finish. What I didn’t understand was if they wanted me to polish the mold after the frekote has dried? or after I pull a part I have to polish the part? Either way how do I do the polishing?

I just spray on and wipe off…that ensures I get full coverage if the spray missed anything.
I figure that is what it means
