Found a great infusion resin but only one problem...

Well I am considering buying some of this stuff http://www.ptm-w.com/index.asp?pgid=180

but the only problem is that is is not UV stable at all, I talked to the manuf and they said that it will yellow. So my question is how should I go about protecting it? Auto clear coat? I’m not really wanting to go with a gel coat.

Also please comment on the resin if you have any ideas. Thanks.

i used it, they sent me a sample. IT SUCKS!!! brittle as hell. if u want i can throw it your way, but i wouldnt recommend it. and also about the UV prot. def. doesnt have it.

Why wouldnt you want to use gelcoat?

You arent going to get a good surface coat out of a resin for infusion meaning your part will have lots of texture.

Thanks for the heads up luisn, so what are you using instead?

Hybrid, I just don’t feel like messing around with it…

ill tell u a couple things.

  1. i HATED the sounds of gelcoat. why? b/c i heard it would crack spider blah blah. BUT this is ONLY true if a. u use TOOO much, or b. ur using something like a white gelcoat to cover up things.

  2. USE GELCOAT! =) i use a clear gel coat and love it.

  3. gelcoat is your friend, it will help with a better surf. as Hyb said. if u use just epoxy ur going to have a small print of the fabric. also, if u use a tach spray your going to mess up your mold.

  4. use V-ester, great to use, better then poly, and less exp. then epoxy. i have used it on some parts and im very VERy amazed of the outcome.

dont want to spend to much money? have companies send you out a small sample. their nice enough to do so. dont get greedy thou =)

Gel coat sounds like a lot of work, for some small parts… but I guess is has the benefit of a protective coating…so I will have to weigh the pros and cons

I also considered vinyl, but I hate the fumes! Any suggestions on a decent vinyl that you’ve used?

Thanks.

u wont smell anything if you do it right! gel coat smell is worse to my opn. then ester.

i used gel coat on a part thats 1ft by 6inch and trust me, u need it. helps in the demolding part also. it bonds well to ester. where are u located?

I’m in edmonton Alberta Canada

oh =. nevermind.

durakane is the most common viny that I’ve seen and used, very nice stuff. little on the dark/yellow side but for infusions you’ll never notice
you can order it from composites canada out in Mississauga, ON

BTW- I tried PM’ing you and emailing, haven’t heard back

Oops my pm box was full, and I havent checked my email in a while:) thanks though

Comp canada sounds like the place that I will be buying my consumables from so I might aswell buy my resin there too…

Does Vinyl need UV protection, (i recall poly being naturally UV resistant, please correct me if I’m wrong).

wait!!! after getting msds sheets from Viking Plastics up in edmonton, I found that they sell the same vinyl ester resins as composites Canada does! i was extremely suprised and happy since I was worried about shipping resin halfway across the country. I beleive the standard VER from durakane is the 511P and the flex resin is the 8084P. Flex is slightly more expensive.

Is this resin UV resistant??? That would save me a bunch of trouble.

Yes that would save a bunch of troubel. I will contact them tomorrow if I have time on my break and look into this.

Evan, how did you come by these msds sheets? are you sure they are the same resin?

positive it is the same resins. I was trying to find a VER from them that I could use for infusion. They didn’t have enough info on hand at the store so they sent me a link for the data (sorry not msds) sheet for the resin. Same number and everything as the stuff from Comp Canada.

probably is the same, like I mentioned its the most common that I’ve seen.

there are no UV stabilizers added to the VE that I know of, but because it is a more a poly based resin it should be more resistant that Epoxy. I’ve never seen any of my parts have UV damage with VE but I did have one come back with a chalky look to it (actually one of a pair). One of my suppliers was convinced it was from water damage. I still think the clear coat that I used wasn’t the best for that application and came off.

“”“Vinyl Ester resin is very similar to polyester for working characteristics. Vinyl ester is a slightly better adhesive and is significantly less brittle than polyester. Cured UV resistance is neglectibly slightly less than polyester. Cost wise, it is about 30% more expensive. If you are making fiberglass repairs, go for vinyl, not polyester.”""

—cant remember the site where this is from sorry

just got advised of another place for composites out on the westcoast.

Trimar … http://fiberglass.ca/

cool guys, I will try and get info from viking tomorrow, coulnd’t do it today it was a day from hell, everything that could have gone wrong did…

will keep you posted on the info;)

Derakane by Ashland?

Hi guys for those of you that are interested, I talked to the guy at Viking plastics here in edmonton, and it is the durakane VER the 511 and 8084 that was mentioned.

Thanks for the lead, it looks like it will pick up a liter of this stuff in the near future and test it out.

my supplier once advised to give the VER a little more UV resistance to add in the duratec high gloss additive. I tried it for a few peices but really didn’t notice a difference in final finish.
