Formula SAE Pedal Face

Thought I would share my latest little project.

I run the North Dakota State University chapter of SAE, and one of our projects is the Formula SAE racing series.

So in efforts to save weight I have taken up more and more composite work in the last couple of years. My latest project is simple pedal faces to replace aluminum ones similar to aluminum ones used in years past.

I still have to trim off the excess but I didnt have time tonight. I will update with completed photos once I have made time to get her cleaned up. I figured you all would like a pic from strait out of the mold anyway.

I am by no measure of the word an “expert” but I can usually make something that looks close(ish) to what I have in mind. Any and all suggestions for improvement are welcome and appreciated!

Very cool! I was in FHSAE for my undergrad. Definitely a good experience.

That is a cool little piece. How do you plan on protecting the face of the piece from regular foot wear and maybe some grip? Are you planning on putting a grip tape type material on it?

Thanks, Yeah I was planning on throwing a small strip of grip tape on it for some traction.

But for reference, our last car (2011) had aluminum pedal faces that weighed 1.35 ounces, these are .34 ounces. Ounces lead to pounds. I’m pretty happy with them.

Putting some grip tape on is lightweight and effective. Not nice, but that is not the goal.

Picture after trimming?

I assume this is for the gas pedal only? For a brake pedal face you’d want it to be a structural component since your foot puts a lot of force on the pedal. I believe it can often be 100 lbs or more.

Is that made using polyester resin? just looks like polyester. What is your method for attaching this pad?
