Foam Core

I’m looking for a 2 or 3mm composite foam that is closed cell ( that is won’t soak up resin) There is no temperature requirement and it won’t see oven or autoclave process.

Two companies i found that make the stuff i thought i would like, is very expensive. They want $35 for a single 20x20x3mm piece. This is the price they quoted me based on ordering 50 pieces. Crazy expensive because i’m not making aircraft parts with it:D

Is pvc foam super ridgid before molding? Can it be draped into a concave shape? The parts i am doing are dished like 6 inches and concave. I would post more but there is a NDA with this customer.

Can u guys recomend a closed cell foam less than 3mm thick?

I have seen it in 3mm 5mm and higher never less than 3 though, somthing i want to try in a infusion using a it asva oem shape structure in a fibreglasd bonnet

Hi Brainstorm, I was just searching online and found some Lantor that is made for infusion. It was for sale on ebay, I’m sure you can find it in the UK also.

yeah 3mm will work well for what i need. I was originally looking at Rohacell IG-F, their product #51. That is their medium density i believe. But it’s expensive. It is a “PMI” type core, I also found PMI foam in China but they want basically the same price… just a dollar or two less. On a personal note: i think american businesses are moving back to the states or out of China because fuel prices make their products the same price as american made products… maybe a couple bucks less in china. I also found it weird that the Chinese government builds entire new cities and they stay vacant. Yes you read that right. They build cities that can accomidate tens of thousands or millions of people and they are brand new ghost towns that never get populated with anyone.

So in the short of it, I still need a foam core that is 3mm and doesn’t cost a lot.

Your bonnet project… just one or two top layers of 200 gram carbon fiber with a 3mm core and it should be very strong.

I wish i could help with the cost but im afraid our prices are more than us. Although i really would like to work with closed cell maybe we can take notes and compare our results when infuseing, espes as i never worked wit closed cell

Airex C70 is cheaper than Rohacell and you can get it in the same density of 50kg/m3. For infusion I use the drilled or slotted one depending on the layup.
If you don’t need a high load material you can take isolation material fron your hardwarestore. They have a polystyrol foam in 2mm.
My favorite is the C70/55.

-Lantor Soric or Coremat XM could do the job (Soric for infusion, XM for bagging). Available in severan thicknesses and styles.

-I have a bunch of 3mm foam (Airex C70.55, Core-Cell A) which has cost me near to nothing. Shipping is a PITA though.

-In our country there is a polystyrene product, 2mm thick, which is used behind wallpaper, to add a little insulation.

Only the Lantor option is drapable, but also more heavy than the other options.

PMI foams are a waste of money, if requirements are low.
