i’m planning to create a mold of my car’s front lip and sideskirts. i would like to ask for inputs on how to go about flanging the parts. do i have to flange all the edges and is it correct that the flange should be 90° perpendicular to the edge? thanks!
Flanges all around, yes, but they do not need to be at 90 degrees. just make sure you can distinguish the edge of your product.
I like the flange to be in the same plane as the part surface at it’s edge for the reason that if you have to change the direction of the fabric to go “up” the 90* then you’re creating heavy unaccountable edges that need a lot of trim and prep. I make the edge of the part lightly distinguishable as necessary so that trim out is very easy to do just by looking at the part right out of the mold. The part is very consistant at the edges and no concern for resin rich areas around the part. There are always reasons to do otherwise but this is my standard.
thanks for the responses guys! by the way, is it ok to make a 3 piece mold for this? the shape of the parts are simple but i find waxing the whole part at once a bit tedious. anyway, i could wax the remaining areas while waiting for the molded area to cure.
