Flanges

I would like to know whats a good, Time, Non-messy way to make a flange that goes around a curved area to make a 2, 3, 4 part mold

thanx!

i usualy use wood cut to the shape i need then mud it in the rest of the way i use production gell on my plugsto finish them off but do belive there is a primer that would sand faster

posterboard.

i think my question is, how do i shape it to the curve? i use poster board as well… i need to start waxing or pvaing it more… needs to be smoother. but, back to the shape… lets say since theres a curve, thats where u have to part it… how do i cut the poster board, wood, whatever to that shape?

so your building a 2piece mold correct
finish your plug wax it up rough in the wood (1/2 in gap no problem)fill in the gaps with mud pull it off the plug sand it flat refit and repeat process as needed time consuming but works very well for me also when laying up be carefull not to build up to much thickness in corner of flang (i tell you this from past experiences)it will build a lot of heat

We use bathroom melamine board, take out time and cut / grind / sand a little at a time to get the fit.

Quality parts takes quality tooling which takes quality time which gets quality prices which makes for a quality livelyhood…

use fiberglass tape, conform it to the shape and add resin, let cure then pop it off. It should be the conformity of the shapre you need then just trace that on to what ever you make your flanges with

i use a stiff, but flexible posterboard for the final flange. to make the shape I use a construction type paper and scissors. depending on the size and shape of the piece I can have the flange ready for lamination in 20 to 60 minutes.

the final posterboard i layup with packing tape on both sides, don’t leave any paper exposed. place it with modeling clay, fill in the gaps with the same modeling clay, fix it in place with bondo, and support sticks, lay up the surface coat, the first layer of cloth and let cure. i then layup the entire mold.

cardboard and foil tape are my best friend making flanges!

ok that i know how to do =). but, lets say you were going you were laying it across the top, see where it curves etc. thats where i wanna put a flange.

I use the fiberglass tape cause that is the fastest and most precise way I know how to do it

I cut a piece of posterboard or a pice of melamine (bathroom) board for the flanges and usually bondo squeeze the melamine board to pick up all the variation of fit agains the surface.
If you get a good fit, you have good joints.

once your bondo kicks, pull it and sand it flush with the face side of the tool, and then hot glue it in place and wax and PVA it . now go to town.
