Got them 98% done now. Guess that’s not finished, but I couldn’t wait to post up. lol. I have to wet sand them and shoot more clear coat on them tomorrow.
Here ya go, my first carbon fiber parts.

Cool! they look like fairly thick parts. how did you get those nice edges cut? what are you using to cut? were these infused?
Thanks, makes me feel good i did something right for a change lol.
The mold is a female mold. The first layer of cloth into the mold was carbon fiber and not cut to the size of the shape, just flange draped onto the mold. The next 5 to 6 layers of 10 ounce fiberglass were cut to the actuall shape of the part before being placed into the mold, 0-45-90-45-0 arrangement. Finally the last layer was also just flange drapped over the mold so as to encapsulate the fiberglass completely. I cut the parts with a drill and then a Dremel tool. The inside cuts were sealed were colored dark brown with a magic marker to hide the white fiberglass, then i brushed clear epoxy over the whole thing, and all the edges. Sanded it smooth, then recoated in epoxy again, then sanded it down smooth, removing most of the epoxy surface coat just leaving a flat smooth surface to clear coat. Yeah, the parts were infused.
did you use resin flow media? what type of resin did you infuse with and how ling did the complete infusion take?
I used the green Aitech flow medium, jgreer.com resin#300/21 hardener… too thick though for infusion so should be thinned a little bit. took 15 minutes to infuse both parts on one mold in one shot. I’m trying the same parts again today, using the same resin, but doubling up the flow medium in a two layer stack. Also the first infusion had an air leak in the bag, so i imagine that slowed down the infusion time.
Nice one What makes the weave go all out of alignment like that, or is it the pics?
Watch out for flow front problems if you use 2 layers of flow medium and a thick resin.
The bottom layers might not get fully infused as fast as the top.
You can only see the top layer of fabric!
Well ok, unless your tooling material is glass.
Good point, problem is the bag material i use i stretchlon 800 and it get sucked down into the flow medium, slowing the resin down too much I think.
I have found the green flow medium always gives a shitty surface with epoxy, I always use the red flow
I’ll try the red sometime.
the green flows too fast, doesnt wet the material out well, and drains the epoxy out of the laminate
explain…“drains the epoxy out of the laminate”
I’ve only used it twice, worked well for me.
