external coating

i am new to carbon fiber. been mocking a piece like this:

I am laying in a mold, but when the epoxy is dry, I get a layer of dried epoxy on the outside of my piece. I have a surface coat as well. Is the extra epoxy normal? I was thinking of wet sanding the piece and then laying the surface coat for a shiny look. I was hoping if I can get a good enough piece, of selling them.

What resin are you laminating with and what resin are you using for the top coat? You know CarbonJoe is the guy who made those pieces right? He’s a member of this forums and he brought those pieces by my shop the other day. If it doesn’t work out you might just want to buy from him.

I bs’ed with him about them. He recommended a vacuum setup, but i cannot afford it right now. I am not sure of the epoxy, but I got it from shopmaninc, it is the fast hardener. Also, not sure of the gelcoat, but I could get when i am at home. Maybye looking for someone to make, if they had a good price. I could provide the plug.

I am hoping to do myself, cause it is fun, and I would like to make more pieces. But, I am a noob, and spent $50 in testing.

Does wet sanding the extra epoxy work? That seems like it would work?!?

Well I’m not discouraging you from doing it yourself. So it’s good if you’re determined to try it until you get it right. That laminating epoxy is pretty good for the $$. Wetsanding will definately help but you’ll also have to buff and polish it after if you want a polished finish.
