exhaust tube

I have a couple questions on making an exhaust tube for a motorcycle. I need to know what temperature i should cure the tube at? There is a metal liner in the tube with fiberglass muffler batting between the metal tube and the carbon fiber tube.

Any other hints?? please.

What resin system are you using? The cure temperature for composites is dependent on the resin system. Some cure at room temperature whereas others require temps as high as 500 degrees farenheit

Yes follow your manufactures specs for time and temp. Bad things can happen if you heat something that shouldn’t be heated.

you will need to work bacwards. Find the highest temp of the exhaust, then find a epoxy system that has a tg a little higher than the max. follow the post cure schedule. But I think youll have a major problem with is the CTE of the metal vs. carbon during post cure and regular service temp. It really depends on how hot it gets. under 200 you could be fine, but really depends on the metal you choose. Aluminum has a very high CTE. Something to think about.

hey Hojo, thanks that is the info i needed.

I want to wait to find an epoxy system until after I knew how hot of a post cure i needed. My explanation was probably very poor about how metal will be used inside the exhaust tube. The metal will only touch in two places where it will be riveted to the carbon fiber… more than likely it will be titanium or stainless steel that gets riveted to the inside of the cf tube.

drawing shows how inner tube does not touch outter cf tubing.
