Epoxy + pigmet VS epoxy gelcoat

Hi guys,
I have to repair a few windsurfing boards, they’re made of epoxy, all of them are white.
I only have polyester based gelcoat, and I don’t want to use it on these boards.

So, should I order some epoxy gelcoat (not available locally), or should I just add some white pigment to the epoxy?

The advantage that I see of using pigment are:
[ul]
[li]Different colours
[/li][li]If there’s a scratch, the colour behind the “gelcoat” would be the same, so it won’t look that bad
[/li][/ul]

What do you guys think?

BTW, the pigment that I was thinking of using would be:
http://www.fibermax.eu/shop/white-pigment-p-215.html
that’s 18.54 € for 1 kg

That would be cheaper than epoxy gelcoat.

Well. since you are not using a mold to make these…you don’t need a gel or surface coating.

All the surfboard types are foam shaped, wrap for reinforcements and then resin coat and sand / polished…

But I do need the repairs to look nice, they should blend with the rest of the board. That’s why I want the repairs to look as white as the rest of the board.

I’m finally ordering some SP pigments to be mixed with epoxy.

Thanks

I would agree… just tint your epoxy white yourself. make sure the epoxy you are tinting is clear… not amber. 3% tint ratio.

If you use white, let us see the mixed epoxy or final results  i’ve never used white pigment myself. I use mostly yellow, black, red.

I’ll be using my clearest epoxy and will post some results.

I’m also getting some black tinting for other boards, will post the results.

Cheers
