I am wanting to “embed” some artwork underneath a thin layer of epoxy on to my carbon fiber structure. My customer is drawing up his artwork and I am wondering what type of material should he put the artwork on…its basically just a small decal…I am guessing that it needs to be done on a material that the epoxy will stick to but not attack…paper? I know people have put stuff underneath epoxy coatings on table tops…but any ideas on what I need to do? Thx.
surfboard tricks are rice paper…the paper basicaly goes completely transparent once wetted with the resin.
You may want to do a few tests. Color on rice paper may still be transparent and may need to be backed up with white underneath.
Oh and you can use polyester “casting resin” which is the same as surfboard clear resin but available in art supply stores. Its more pricey but its readily available that way.
Good luck!
Excellent info…thanks. THats going to save me alot of time and pain.
Yes, always do small scale tests panels to save money and lost time!
No problem, Ive thought of doing custom logo work in peices myself and searched the internet tirelessly to find the info I needed.
Silkscreening the rice paper is best. But you can use a printer, laser will last longer (in regards to fading) over inkjet.
how does one silk screen rice paper?
silk screen directly on the parts, or use rice paper
Try Googling Silk screen DIY …
Interesting! What is rice paper? Where do you get it? Can you put rice paper through a printer? Thanx.
This surfboard/fiberglass place has some rice paper in their product catalog…you can get it at some art supply stores also. Fiberglasssupply says it “can be printed upon by some laser printers”.
