Ok first thank you EMI for PMing me this forum. Well I placed an order today to start working with CF I went with the Per surfboard resin from US Composites. They said it is always tacky so no sanding between coats of resin but final coat you add sanding agent which will cure the final coat and not leave it sticky then sand, clear, sand, and buff. Well they also said never heard of per melting plastic so I guess what I am asking is should I call and change my order to epoxy I am going to be overlaying both plastic and metal? The epoxy is double in cost but I can handle the cost not a problem I want to do good parts with minimal effort HAHA I know its work but no reason to do more if theres abetter product thats saves time. I am in Florida so US Composites work for me what do you guys recommend? Hope I get an answer soon or I am stuck with PER surfboard resin. Thanks in advance.
I use that product in 90% of my work. No you won’t be able to sand it because it is unwaxed. You can either add wax to it or to build up a topcoat(i prefer duratec clear) and then sand that.
No, per does not melt plastic.
This piece is clear gel/duratec high gloss additive mixed 50/50, surfboard resin, and duratec topcoat.
cfcrafting Thanks for the reply I was getting nervous about what I purchased I said in my post that it stays tacky if theres no wax from your reply Im thinking that you dont need to add wax ever just spray your top coat (Im thinking of going with duratec high gloss) and then wet sand and buff or do I need to add wax to final coat to get a good solid cure and not a tacky finish then scuff and top coat then wet sand and buff. One other question should I use a gelcoat or just build up resin layers wax top layer (so I can sand it smooth) then apply duratec high gloss clear then wet sand and buff? Maybe I should apply wax to all resin coats and sand between coats but that seems to be more work? I am not using molds as of yet thought I would do overlays first hone skills find market make profit then invest in molds and what not.
Forgot to add this does the PER surfboard resin work with carbon/kevlar hybrids?
sure does.
All the surfboard PER resin I have gotten has had surfacing agent (wax) in it. You can see it when you pour a cup of it and there’s a film floating on top of it.
Surfboard resin is also called sanding resin.
Maybe you are getting a clear lamination resin which is without the surfacing agent and will not fully cure (stays sticky) so you can place the next layer without needing to sand or wash with acetone to remove the wax.
But true surfboard resin would work as a top coat…
PER will melt plastics, try it on some PS (polystyrene)…or ABS…
yeah if it is a true surf board resin then it should sand
oh yeah and you are welcome
abs is not a plastic?
