EPOXIES and more...

OK, I was at a major So. Calif. Composites Manufactuer / supplier yesterday swaping out a full roll of Fiberglass 1 1/2 oz mat (60" wide) for 3/4 oz mat (50" wide) and I had many more stops to go on the way home…but the VP in charge of operations heard my voice and chased me down in the parking lot!

Well, I didn’t want to take up his valuable time but since we had not sat down together in awhile, we did.

He did tell me many interesting things that are happening in the Industry and I wanted to type some of them here and after I get an OK from him, more to come:

They are some companies out there that are selling Epoxy resins for safe spraying! DO NOT BELIEVE them yet! They (himself and 2x others) tested them in their full on, state of the art spray booth with full on rebreathers / hazmat type outfits and 2x of the 3x (he was one of them…) had bad reactions  to sparying these “so called” Safe to spray Epoxies!
It is the hardeners that are atomized that are letal or deadly! They and others are working on them but…be safe!

FACE coats: With PER you have gel coats for the surface coating, with Epoxies, there were none available. They will be coming out soon which will be called “FACE COATS” for a surface coating working with Epoxy laminates.

There also has been many improvements to clear coatings too. They have been working to make them clearer and with the Clarke Foam up and quitting, they have pushed the envelope for more clearer resins!

More to come…

is the unsafe bit the same for the epoxy based marine primers that people use every day in the boating repair world.

I say so as I painted a custom truck of mine with Imron and the auto body shop that allowed me to use their booth loan me very “special resperator” and this was in the late '70’s no less…ok, no jokes about me being brain dead!
