Edges fraying...help please!

…This is continuation on the shin guards I started talking about here…

One issue has developed…while these guards are exceptionally strong and solid, one took an impact along the top edge, and the composite fractured, and the carbon has begun to fray. It’s quite soft to the touch in that spot.

So now I’m trying to devise a way of making these stronger along the edges…any ideas?

Thanks everyone!

Lay in extra layers / material along the edge and less in the centers.

Add a ridge or shape to the area that fractured ie you can’t make owt out of eggshells but an egg can be stood on

OR

Add a bit of extra material in likely impact areas. The trouble with carbon is when it breaks it can shatter and leave nasty sharp edges, I saw a guy with a broken carbon bike fairing impaled in his leg once. Maybe use kevlar which should hold together better.
Do some resin have more flex than others? Maybe worth trying a different make of resin.

Are you sealing the edges of your parts?

Try swiping your finished cut parts with epoxy as to fully seal the edges. A small emount of 5 minute epoxy on a rag will work. We use 3M DP100.

I would seal the edges and come up with some type of lip guard.
