I have a couple old molds that need a few small repairs and was thinking about refinishing them with Duratec. I don’t have the original plugs or a part to work off of and I’m only pulling a couple of parts or I would just build new tooling. Is FMS sealer and 700-nc a suitable release system on Duratec. I’m using epoxy resin and have had some issues in the past with other automotive primers sticking. Any info would be helpful, Thanks
Yep, totally fine. I’ve got a couple of moulds where the gelcoat alligatored on application. I just filled them with the Duratec surface primer and they have been working perfectly with epoxy parts, infused and pre-preg. Doesn’t even leave a different texture to the tooling gelcoat around it, it’s 100%.
Sunshield is the same, and it’s a bit more abrasion resistant than the surface primer so may be better for longevity. That said, my moulds with the surface primer are about 20 parts old and still as good as new, so it may not be too much of an issue.
Also using Frekote 700 so you will be totally fine.
