drilling holes

what is the best method for drilling holes through a composite piece without the gel coat splintering?

i would say start on the gel coat side with a regular, meaning not pilot point drill bit, and go slowly until the gel coat is completely punctured. then go from there. in conclusion… very carefully

I do know the sharper the bit the more splintering i get

I find it helps to put a piece of tape down on the surface and drill through it.

What about bigger holes??? Such as something like a 2 1/16" hole that you might normally use a “hole saw” that you attach to a drill??? I am talking about for a gauge pod… Same deal??? Just go in reverse or is there a different method for bigger holes??

I cut those out with my husky saw and then just fine sand to a perfect circle

That isnt really want I WANTED to do… lol But I thought that might be the case… Hopefully when the house gets done in June I can actually start to get these projects going :? …

Everything kinda got put on hold between clearing up my credit for a better mortgage rate and working 60+ hrs a week at two jobs to help pay for furniture and other accesories (including my workbench, 60 gal compressor, and Robinair pump). Hopefully I will have my own “little carbon factory” here soon.

I think that would be the safest to do.
