I have a 1 inch thick flange of fiberglass I’m wanting to put two layers of 5 oz kevlar over the top of the flange laminated with epoxy…how tough will it be to drill 5/16 holes through the flange (fiberglass + kevlar)…I ask because Ive never drilled thorugh kevlar and am not sure how or if the drill will cut through easily? Thanks.
it should cut fine, but I always drill holes in reverse and also I put a piece of tape where I am going to cut to help it not fray
Great…thanks for the tape tip!!
I agree with DT with reverse direction, but as I tell my students “Test anything first on a small test piece before screwing up an expensive mold or part!”
You might also try clamping 2x pieces of wood with the top pre-drilled to locate where you want the hole to be. With clamping (expressily with PMMA Sheeting), you prevent cracking and splitering.
But if you do spinter or fuzz (frizzy hair?) the hole, a little resin will fix that!
