Does this exist?

Anyone know of a place that has close surface pictures of the different finishing techniques of carbon fiber? A simple wet lay, vacuum bagged, and infused, all with and without a clear gel coat or finish coat.

Thanks.

If there is no such source, it’s a very interesting idea, and would be of great benefit.

We just make a study. We will make microscopic pictures from the surface, from a grinded cut, will test the VF and the porosity. We will also
make some strength, bending tests and dynamic stress tests.
I will post the pictures and results here.
We will test: wet layup, vacuum bagged, standard infusion, MTI infusion, MTI VF controlled infusion, out of autoclave prepreg and autoclave prepreg.

Very interesting DDCompound! Especially the difference between OOA prepreg and infusion in relation to surface quality and vf.

Nice one! I will be keeping an eye out for that…

any idea on when you’re likely to post the results, i’m dying to see those

It is a lot of work. Also I have to wait because the University is doing it step by step. I don’t want do do it on my owen, I want independet results from a third party.

I’m glad other people like my idea. Huge thanks to DDCompound for hopefully putting something up for us. I mostly wanted it as a place to educate customers about surface finishes using certain techniques. I’ll make simple carbon fiber panels using vacuum bagging, or infusions and I think when people don’t know, they think parts pop right out of the mould with that “wet” 3D look. I know theres techniques to get that but that adds time/money/weight (I work on race cars so weight is very important even if its a few ounces).
