DIY Spray Booth

I’m ready to spray up some molds and parts but I"m very enviroment conscience, I used to use the spray booth @ Cerritos (thanks Terry) but I’ve moved to southern Illinois were these facilities are RARE. I know the regulations are very different between here and there but can I make a “garage type paint booth” for polyester resins? What special filters do I use? Thanks for any info…

It you want to catch the “solids” go to a body shop supply and pick up some cardboard spray booth exhaust filters, These go in the exhaust, they pick up most of the solids. If you want to capture the styrene you will need a regenerative catalytic voc eliminator,They costs about 1/2 million for the smallest one so forget about it. You can do an activated charcoal filter but it doesn’t do much except make you feel better that you are at least trying. or your levels the charcoal filter should absorb some to most of the styrene depending on size. Then these filters have to be properly disposed of or you just transfered the waste from one area to another. If you leave them open after you absorb your styrene it leaches back out slowly so you really haven’t done anything but even out the flow instead of one big hit.

Do products like styrid only supress the smell of styrene or do they do anything do neutralize?

The big differences in good spray booths and shitty ones is the equiptment you have. Explosion proof lights and fan motors.

Build yourself a cheapie by making a frame out of pvc pipe and taping thick visqueen or equivelant to it. Make sure you have a good fan blowing out and use a couple of house dust filter for HVAC to pull through and youll catch most of your solids.

To be honest, I paint all the time and one thing I noticed was that I have next to nothing for overspray with poly gelcoat and a hvlp paint gun converted to gelcoat use. The styrene smell? Youre kinda screwed.

We are in the class just now using the PER odor suppressors and it seems like the students can notice the odor differences and that it is much better.

But my old smeller…doesn’t work where well!

Are you going to be spraying in your garage (my back door neighbor has spray painted 5 cars over the years in his garage, but most of us near him are car freaks like “Fast Eddie” of Hot Rods fame, myself and others like that…) and how NEAR are your neighbors?

Just like others have stated…no open flames in the area!

Any other tips for him Kevin?

Nearest neighbor is about an acre away…I think I’ll go with the filters to catch the solids route and plant a few extra trees to compensate for the styrene:)

PS: I just saw Terry Price on Wed. as he needed clipboard clips & key ring fobs and after he saw the others I had…he cleaned me out…:frowning:

Now I got to order more up for my own class…:o

HAHA that rascal! I think he has enough supplies to make an entire airbus:)

I attempted to Google “PER odor suppressors” to no avail. What is it?

I bought ours from www.Revchem.com and it takes just a little eitbity like 6cc for a 5 gallon pail…

i belive “per odor suppresors” are wax that come to the top of laminate after they are rolled that means after set up no more laminating on top of them i looked in to them was told this and quite my research into them any further
if any of you guys no this not to be correct i will continue to look into them

No, that is surfacing agent.

This actually changes the smell of the uncured, stage “A”, non catalysed PER liquid resin.

We have “Citrus” in ours at the classroom…

Hey Honda, where abouts in So. Ill. are you? I’m in Robinson, IL…anywhere close?

Im not sure where Robinson is…Im on the border of IL and KY. Paducah KY is about 15 mins away and Carbondale Il is about 40 mins away…ring any bells?
