DIY MTI hose?

I have tons of regular spiral tubing, and I like the idea behind MTI (but not the extra $2/ft in consumables).

Has anyone tried wrapping spiral tube in perforated release film and using it on the vacuum side, as a kind of DIY MTI hose? Or are they using something like goretex fabric?

Might just give it a try and see what happens, but thought I’d ask first to see if the idea sounds reasonable.

We are using a kind of “Gore Tex”, we developed our own semipermeable membrane that has maximum airflow but still acts as a resin barrier.
A perf release film will not work like the MTI hose. I will not stop people building (or try to) their own MTI hose. In the end you will realize that it is easier, better and cheaper to buy the ready product.

house wrap like tyvek may work but I haven’t tried

Personally, I’d rather keep my tyvek suits for staying clean, and my MTI hose for finish quality. I can see how the home hobbyist might want to save a few cents here and there, but for production, it’s worth the cost for repeatable quality infusions.

I agree. MTI Hose is a consumable which, if you are considering using it, then it is well worth its cost. It works and it works very well. It’s not necessary, as it’s possible to achieve perfect results using regular infusion methods, but if you are considering making your own then it’s obviously because you haven’t mastered regular infusion. In which case, the MTI will help you, and it will pay for itself.
