what are the difference between using acetone and styrene as thinner? Is the thinner only for gel coat or it can also thin resin too? Is it possible I can spray gel coat with prevail sprayer once it’s thinned( portable sprayer you can find at home depot). Can I spray CAN spray primer on the plug instead of duratec polyester primer? Thanks for anyone who can answer my questions.
The biggest difference is that acetone “kills” mekp (hardener), so it will take longer to catalyze (harden) and may never reach full potential strength. It can be used for both resin and gel, Gel is basically resin with agents to make it thicker and opauqe.
You MIGHT be able to thin gel enough to get it to go thru a preval but there will be so much thinner in it, It will take forever to cover and it will probably eat the internals of the preval, not to mention the risk of alligatoring. You would probably be better off just brushing the gel on.
You can spraythe plug with anything you want,BUT most rattle can paints don’t sand worth a damm and the adhesion isn’t the best either, This is mainly due to the fact that they are mostly thinner so they can make it out of the can.
Thanks for the replay maybe I should start use the paint sprayer gun, but what size should the Nozzle Size be if I thinn down the gel coat? How do you clean the gun after you use it so resin wont clog inside the gun?
clean the gun with acetone or MEK when done, do it quick, don’t let it sit arond or you’ll be buying another gun. If you use a cheap gravity feed you don’t have much to loose. Buy the biggest fluid tip they sell for the gun. the more metal parts on the gun the better, easier to clean with acetone.
I use a 2.0mm needle and tip for my hvlp gun.
I wouldnt use acetone either…it sucks and no more than20% thinned for anything.
