Diamond router bits?

Hi guys,

I’m curious what the finish looks like after running a diamond router bit over fiberglass.

I’ve been experimenting getting two sides of a piece smooth and faired, and then rounding over the corners. With a standard carbide bit, it leaves a scalloped finish and requires a bit of sanding to get smooth.

Do diamond bits leave a smooth finish on fiberglass?

Who do you guys buy your diamond bits, and cutoff wheels from?

Thanks,

Zach

I use diamond cut, down cut, fine cut bits to cut through 0.055" carbon sheets. The edges are flawless on the top of the cut but the bottom has a few frays which takes a few seconds to sand off. Any bit pushes the material in one direction so you will have some tearout on one side of the material since fiberglass is a fiberous material with varying densities. My cuts are straight through though…

If you are rounding over the edges it may be difficult to get a perfect edge without some kind of snding work afterward.

I’ve tried spiral cut, diamond cut, diamond grit, PCD, and carbite bits. A $3 diamond bit works best. I tried a $150 PCD bit and had horrible results!
