Damn pinholes!

I have vac bagged a couple of parts and I am having trouble with a few pinholes where the weave crosses over.

I am degassing the resin(west epoxy),brushing some on the waxed mold, squeegeeing(is that a word?) the resin on both sides of the carbon cloth, laying it in the mold and another quick squeegee. Then peel ply, breather and bag. 20#25 hg of vac and a fairly shiny part but a few pinholes. Should I be putting in a layer of resin and letting it gel first?

Cheers

Are you getting a tight seal of the bag against your material? For overlays, this is one of the reasons I prefer vacuum baggin when I can is that it eliminates the pin hole problem.

How many layers are you putting in the mould before bagging?

3 layers of 200gsm. First layer resin rich and subsequent layers have both sides coated with resin and then squeggeed off the excess. I have also tried just one layer on a bit of glass and still I get pinholes. Perhaps I need to warm the resin and the room as it is pretty cold at the moment.

What gel time does your resin have?

When you said peel ply, breather and bag , did you mean release film, breather and bag?
I have similar issues wth pin holes and surprisingly I find that
too much resin will cause the problem. I squeegee out the resin on the bench on all layers and when I put it in the mould I don’t appply any resin to the mould surface. It’s almost as if the excess resin makes it difficult for the air to get out. Also I find a slower resin without heat when curing seems to work better. When making a part I generally put two layers in the mould, bag it ,cure it and then lay in the remainder of the layers. I don’t think you’ll ever get rid of the pin holes completely without the purchase of an autoclave. Even if you clear coat in the mould before you start, the pin holes are usually visible under the clear coat. How many inches of Hg did you say your vacuum pump gives?

Nope I meant peel ply but I have also used perferated release film. My pump will pull 20hg but at a push I can get 25hg. Gel time i would have o check but I am using west epoxy105 and 205 hardner. I would be surprised if ti was too much resin as I thought thats what the idea of using peel ply and breather ie to soak up the excess resin.

is their any way you can take pics of the problem you are having? are they pin holes are do they follow the shape of the carbon? I wish I could explain better. Are they circle pin holes or are they weird shaped? I am going to try and find a pic to explain better cause they could be dry spot.

Best I could do picture wise…

yeah those are just normal pin holes, damn— I don’t get pin holes sinec I infuse so I am no help :frowning:

Ya, but who’s going to stick their nose that close when it is running at speed???
