Creating parting lines for complex part molds

I am curious as to what other people are using to create neat parting lines for molds of complex parts and any associated techniques?

By complex parts I really mean parts with a hole in them, so it’s hard to make the parting line even and straight on both sides of the hole.

Creating a parting line (for me) is undoubtedly the most difficult, frustrating and tedious step of making a carbon fiber part.

I started out by creating a parting line out of epoxy putty that went slightly over the desired parting line height and then sanding it to the correct level afterwards. It was time consuming but it worked (eventually).

More recently, I started using silicone rubber. I bury just under half the plug in play doh with a dam around the perimeter. Then I fill it up to half way using a low (ish) viscosity silicone. It’s not cheap but it works perfectly. My recent parting lines have been both perfectly level and flat on both sides of the holes in my plugs.

I’d like to hear if anyone else here has a preferred trick they would be ok to share?

Don’t have holes in your plug
Make your"hole" a loose tool that you bolt onto your flat mould

How would that work for a part like this:

This is the first cf stock I ever made and the one that gave me the most trouble when making the mold. If you wanted clean central parting lines on both sides of the hole, how does making inserts achieve this?

Do you have a photo of an example you could show me to help me understand how your method works?
