Countertop?

Quick Question…

Wondering how a fake countertop using a black pigmented resin with glitterflake in it will end up looking. I was thinking of using the silver glitterflake but am worried it will end up looking extremely cheezy…anyone have any experience making a finished surface with glitterflake???

If you use resin with black pigment, and add glitter flake to this, you simply wont be able to see the glitterflake at all!

The way to do this is to spray a coat of clear gel mixed with glitterflake, over a previously applied coat of black.

this is what I am thinking…

  1. Lay down a 1-1.5" layer of black pigmented resin.
  2. Lay down a coat of resin with glitterflake in it (can this stuff be sprinkled on by hand or do I have to use a gun?)
  3. Lay a 1/8" layer of clear resin on top.

Will this look cheezy? anyone used this stuff before?

I’m usually the one to experiment Evan but I think I’ll leave that up to you! I don’t know how the epoxy would hold up to hot cups and pans etc. Probably not very well. I once had a car painted with metalflake. The painter sprayed it on he said it was the only way to get a random and uniform distribution of the flake. It was a shitty paint job and lasted less than a year.

Why not do a small test if you have the materials. A salt shaker might work for the flake.

This wont actually be used as a countertop, rather for a fake one for a pub-crawl bus. Would be poly not epoxy as wel…

I think if you try to sprinkle the glitter flake onto the wet per or gel coat it will end up splotchy. Unless… lol you grab a little bit at a time and throw it high into the air haha. sorry i’m tired after 12 hrs of work today.

do like Classic said… mix the flake into your clear gel coat and spray it. You’ll be happier with the results I think. Get some mica flakes or pearl and mix into the clear gel… that would look bad a**. You can get powdered pearl on ebay for cheap.

I definitly think I am going to try this. I may end up having to use Epoxy for the topcoat as I do not have a local source for clear surfboard resin and am on a bit of a time constraint. Anyone have any silver flake?

Turns out my mother used to do a lot of scrapbooking and has some flake remaining. I need to find a source for a clear resin in my area…I kinda want a 1/8" layer of clear topcoat for a cool transparent look…

sounds like you need to put a little glow in the dark in the clear as well… make them pub crawls worth the effort!!!

Thats a damn cool idea…

cultured marble or the fake stuff is made by shooting in your clear and then they are put on a shaker table to settle the crushed granite or marble and epoxy is poured in.

Id probably shoot in a thick layer of clear and then mix in some glitter with the resin and shoot another layer

I’ve seen plenty of boat hulls done up with a glitterflake over tinted resin. It works, sometimes it seems a little over the top, but I think over black it would look alright.

Here’s a how to do metal flake composite product (if this works…):

I’ve been wanting to add powdered pearls to clear gel coat. It should work ok … it’s just suspending these very fine particles in the resin.
