Core Materials

What core materials have you used and what were the results? Would you suggest anything off the bat?

I know this is a broad question but I’m trying to get a general idea of what’s out there and what it’s used for.

Thanks!

end grain balsa
paper honeycomb
nomex/kevlar honeycomb
plastic honeycomb
aluminum honeycomb
foam…and there are about 100 grades, and MANY types (solid, has holes, has channels, is scored for bending, soft, hard, etc etc etc etc)
non-woven glass mats, and even woven glass mats
anything that can transfer shear from the facesheets.

Uses for each? Umm…anything and everything.
Balsa is used alot in marine apps for some reason…seeing that once it gets a hole and wet, you are screwed.
honeycombs are not good for infusion unless facesheets are sealed on it already, else resin fills the cells.
Foam is good for most apps, but not always suited for high-temp cures, or autoclave. Depends on the foam of course.
mats are used to bulk up, but not add strength.

Do any of you guys know places where I could get scraps of these materials? I’d really like to learn about each one firsthand.

I would say to contact Airtech, Richmond Air products (aircraft products?) or Northern Fiberglass Sales. They MIGHT be able to help. Else, it will be a google search for each one, and calling the companies that make it. Or maybe sometimes distributors. Normally places like Rohcell will give out sample packs. I’m sure most manufactures will.

In the end, a sample here, a sample there means a full roll when you decide on them!!

Now, trying to get a sample 30w red laser diode system…iiiiisn’t exactly the same deal

Nida-Core offers a free sample pack. http://nida-core.com/english/
