Composite Rated Pinking Shear?

Hello all,

I am wondering if there is a composite (Aramid, Vectran) rated pinking shear currently available, and if so what is recommended. Have been eying the Wiss CB-9, but not sure those are capable of handling the above fibers. This is for fabric with non-resin construction, so would like to have the pinked edge to reduce fraying. Any ideas? Thanks much.

Kevlar is easy with any good and sharp serrated shear. Vectran I have only been able to cut with a heat-knife. But a brand new kevlar specific MIGHT be ok on vectran.

Thanks Riff! So the CB-9 is GTG in your opinion? I just wanted to make sure it was ok on Aramid. My regular Kevlar shears actually do ok on Vectran, shockingly. I guess the heat knife would obviate the need for a pinking shear, as the heat chould cauterize/seal the end.

Sorry, was thinking pinking was just a style/size, not the pattern of cut. I don’t think you need pinking shears for composites. Just a good serrated set. That way each fiber is locked into place as it cuts. Maybe Pinking works the same way?

Thanks Riff. I have a great set of Kevlar shears, but really do need the “pinked” edge for my current project to keep the fabric from fraying/unraveling. I am using it in a non-resin application that experiences high wear/flexion, and edge tape is a pain in the tuckus. The Wiss CB-9 are advertised in the Aircraft Spruce catalog in the composites section, but am leery of dropping a Grant just to check their suitability. I could not tell if the Wiss have those fiber holding serrations like normal composite shears…

Thanks again.

I have Wiss shears and they work great. They recommend getting two pairs, one for carbon and one for kevlar, which I agree with. I haven’t worked with any expensive shears but I would definitely recommend Wiss.

Thanks Canyon. I have good set of Kevlar shears, and will probably end up trying out the CB-9s…shears are like flashlights, you can never have TOO many…
