Completed Side Covers

For a Yamaha R1. I just finished these tonight. I don’t usually stay with one part from start to finish as I’m working on about 15 different parts or molds at any given time. Hence why it took me so long to complete this set.

Looks really nice. Did they come out of the mould like that or did you clear coat them?
Nice job.

looks great!

did you figure out the mount tab things on the back side?

My parts don’t usually come out perfect out of the mold same with these. I had to sand them and clear coat them. Some day I may experiment with brushing down some clear epoxy onto the mold surface, let it b stage then add cloth and infuse. For now I just lay the cloth into the mold and then infuse.

The mounting tabs I used a carbon fiber plate i made, cut it to the shapes i needed and glued them onto the backside of each panel. There are two tab mounts on each panel. I’m actually searching for some specific carbon fiber bar stock to use as tabs/brackets on future R1 side panels.

I have a new plug all made up for the 07-08 R1 side covers, just haven’t had the time or extra materials to build the mold yet.

very nice job!

very nice! What are you using to trim the parts?

your parts are awsome. is that the finish you are getting right out of the mold?

Thanks. I use a dremel and cut off wheel to trim the parts, then i sand the edges using a dremel then switch to hand block sanding. These parts did not come out of the mold like this. I actually had to repair this set and epoxy surface coat them twice, sand it down, then clear coat.

The clear coat i use now sucks, it’s not very glossy and it’s acrylic enamel. I plan on switching to a 2 component urethane clear. First I need to buy a small air compressor and a lvlp gun.

I’ll just tent off the door to my little storage and use it as a spray booth, or clear coat the parts at the machine shop since they have an area i can use there outside. I’ll just clear coat then lay a cardboard box over the parts to keep dust off them until they dry.

Nice one fast, is there any chance we could see a pic or 2 of the mold please, always interested to see how people flange etc.

I found this clear coating, sounds good cause it can be applied with a brush, but by the sound of it i don’t think you can actually use it outdoors as uv protection…
