comosite newbie

i just wanted to pop in and say hello. my name it doug and im from calimesa ca. (inland empire). by trade i am i union industrial electrician. but my passion is making things stronger and faster and lighter. i am really into motorsports…i have an adventure dirt/street bike. a pure street bike. and a porsche 914 (poor mans porsche).

im a welder, tig and mig. and i powder coat out of my garage. im a jack of all trades- master of non. LOL i try to do all of my work on my vehicles myself. i have a pretty good set of tool and know how to use them. some better than others.

but know i am trying to learn something that is way out of my league… i want to become a compositeer…(is that even a word?) im more of a mechanic…and composites is an art form. so i think im in for a real challenge. but im gonna give it a shot. i have spent hours of research on the web, reading, watching videos and was lucky enough to stumble across your forum when i was researching a DIY resin trap. if somthing i need is made out of steel, i would rather make it than buy it.

i have been trying to gather tools and material to start. im out of work so money’s tight. i traded some electrical for an old vacuum pump. a duoseal 1405. the new seal kit should be in tomorrow.

right now i am just making lugs and molds until i can get all my vacuum pieces together.

i will be making mostly motorcycle and car parts. but my goal is for somebody to bring me anything and i can say, “sure, i can make that”

this is a picture of my first plug. i just did it yesterday.

Welcome to the forums!
I’m trying to get into welding myself, I’m not terribly good at it but I’m hoping I can get a lot better through practice.

thats all it is, practice, practice, practice. just like anything else i guess…what type of welding are you using? stick? mig?

Same advice for composites! Right now practicing as much tig welding as I can while I’m still a student.

wow! they start you guys off with tig? i started with an oxy/act torch.

I’m not taking a class, just dropping in on my free time to practice. I figure if I can learn Tig I can learn any of the others.

Oxy Act is by far the coolest looking:) How long have you been welding?

tig and oxy are very similar. mig is like a squirt gun. and stick…well its stick…

ive been welding… hmmmm? 22 years. i learned at valley collage san bernardino when i was 19…

lets keep chating to get my post count up so i can post pictures…LOL

i stick weld at work. i have a mig and tig machine here at home. if your ever out this way, your more than welcome to stop in and glue some metal together. its way easier to learn when someone is looking over your shoulder giving direction…

Congrats! You should have sufficient post count to get private messages, signatures, and everything else. Where exactly in the Inland Empire are you located? I go to school at Cal Poly Pomona

i live in a small village in the east…

LOL
