coloring epoxy

i used to have a liguid i bought to tint epoxy. cant find it and was wondering if there is something readily available that will work. i want to dye it black? would epoxy paint work? thanks

There are special pigments to tint resins. Some don’t work with both ester and epoxy resins, so look at the specs.

You have to remember that paint is er, paint with a pigment in it, there may be only 5% colour in there and 95% is the other things which make up paint. Pure resin pigment is nearer 100% colour, I’ll let you do the maths as to how much paint you would have to include in your mix to get a satisfactory colour by which time there would be more paint than resin… Some resin pigments are added by only 5%.

So to sum up: No, you will have to buy the correct product or risk failure.

carbon black will tint the epoxy black and not effect the characteristics of the epoxy. Just use 2 % or so.

graphite powder would probably work also so long as it’s black. As long as no other ingredients are in the powder.

thanks guys.

I needed red and blue once upon a time…so I went to Michael’s. Once I got over the stink of…whatever that is in there…I managed to find the candle making section, where they have candle tints in several colors. I can’t recall seeing black there, but it MIGHT be worth your while to take a peek or call 'em up.

Jgreer.com $12 per pint any color. Their tints work in either epoxy or polyester resins. I tested it out.

I still have qt’s of color pigments here from my former classroom!

I have also use craft store pigments tints in their resin section too!
