Clear coaing finish parts

Hello Guys,

Tried a search but nothing really show’s what I am after.

On the final stage now of finishing our parts. This brings me to ask what products do you use?

I haven’t sprayed a thing in my life other than from a rattle can. My biggest concerns are UV protection and do I need a clear etching coat before I clear the part? The local spray shop seems to think so?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Im using either sikkens superior 250 quid 5 litres, house of kolor or spies hecker depending what my shop has in stock

no need to “etch” the surface of the part… your paint shop doesn’t know doink about carbon fiber lol.

I usually wet sand the surface with 600 grit paper prior.

Just clean the surface prior with surface prep, or laquer thinner on a white clean lint free cloth.

Many of us use automotive urethane clears. There’s about 50 different brands available. Test paint some blank metal panels before letting it rip on the carbon. or buy a couple used car fenders to practice on.

Practice, practice, practice, also expect some fish eyes, possible divets etc…carbon can be difficult to clear, often requires 2 to 3 hits with wet sand in between.

Thanks for the replies guys, so grateful for this forum and the guys that make it what it is.

Here are some of the parts from a rattle can, still need sanding back and clearing again. I will try some of the clearcoat’s you guys have suggested. Now to master the spray gun

Only problem we found with the exhaust shield (3 layers carbon 200g) is that when trimming and sanding the edges, especially the bottom edge of the exhaust shield, it appeared very dry with loose fibers sticking out? I don’t know if that is common when trimming carbon with a carbide disc?

I think that a “primer” is needed prior applying the clearcoat.
Paint shops commonly use the “Plastoflex” primer, which helps the clear to adhere to untreated plastic parts, like bumpers, spoilers etc.

No primer is needed

i would use an adhesion promoter (which is clear ) prior to clear coat ( not a primer)

Simply activate a little resin in a cup after sanding your edges and brush it on. Let dry and sand the whole part to prep for clear. Shoot all at once.

Lets keep it simple when we can.

Hey fastrr, when you pull a part from a mold and you don’t have a gel coat layer and fibers are pretty much at the surface with minimal to no resin layer on the surface do you end up sanding into the fibers of the part?

I recall pulling some parts in the past and doing a bit of sanding and being into the fibers almost immediately… Unless there is a gelcoat layer you will be sanding right into the fibers on an infused part, no?

Parts look good.
