cleaning wax off a mold

What are you guys using to clean wax off a mold?

Why would you want to remove the mold release wax? If repairing a mold, then fine sandpaper or rubbing alcohol.

that is why, I have several molds that need refinished and I am sick of using a new piece of sand paper every couple inches when sanding on the molds that have been waxed. I’ll try the rubbing alcohol

hmmmmm… I only get build up in the corners and I scrape them with toothpicks.

I did make a flat sheet and needed the wax off of it and used some acetone…

Sorry I couldnt be more help.

to remove wax build up i soak rags in stripper and let set over night

try acetone. that stuff eats more than alcohol. We use Alcohol on coated molds to clean, but if we need to take OFF mold release, acetone.
Foam-in-a-can cleaner is acetone for small uses. Else, I’m sure an industrial catalog would have it.

Try dish soap for initial cleaning and then go back with acetone. I found that acetone dries too quickly and gums up my rags if I have a lot of wax down. Dish soap won’t get it all but it seems to work well on my hands when I am done waxing molds. I also use it to clean my wax applicator rags.

Just an idea. Dish soap is cheap

Acetone may smear the gel coating so be carefull but I have use it too…

That is why I tell my serious students to pick up an old washing machine that someone has replace with a new one (most only need a small part but we are a throw away socilaty) and use that for rags and such only!

we should…but I think we have the budget to just buy another box of tshirt rags. I feel SO bad when I use one just to clean off a mold/part I sanded, and throw it. I’m sure we can wash it out!
Maybe I’ll starrt hand washing stuff in the sink!

Acetone in sinks with PVC Drain piping probaly isn’t the best idea.

Yea, I know it…I pinch every penney I can, but then I get to keep many cool adult toys too!;):stuck_out_tongue:

MEK. im pretty sure thats all frecote mold cleaner is

how about silicone cleaner? the one used before spray painting…
