Clay for molding

What type of clay is used for molding. I am asking this question, because here in Guatemala I am not being able to find clay for modeling. I went to a couple of shops which sell resins and FG (boat manufacturing shops) and they don’t have clay. they offered me silicone rubber but is not what I need. I just need some clay to fill some gaps between the plug and flanges.

Can I used regular clay, like to one my children use to play??

Also, how advisable is to use plaster as a molding material for FG/CF? If possible to use, how do you release the plug from the mold when using it, and what do you use to seal it, before applying the resin?

The basic problem I am facing is that supply of composite material in guatemala seems to be very limited. I already learn that CF is impossible to get here. I will probably have to order it from the US.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Mario

Modeler’s clay. If you have a hoby shop, or hobby supply store, that’s the way to go.

You just want the stuff that’s oil based and not water based because you don’t want it to dry up on you.

Thanks for your reply. I will try a hobby shop.

any comment on the use of plaster as molding material?

Thanks again

I have this book, some great techniques for getting plaster molds to work right. Also a good breakdown of advantages/disadvantages.

I would break it down for you but there’s several pages in here of good stuff, plus it’s fairly cheap.

Oh, great I have ordered it a couple of days ago, so I guess I would have all the info I need. Thanks
