Choosing process

Hi everybody !

We are son starting with a new Project, a 1,2 x 0,5 x 0,5 m cosmetic carbón box. (4 x 1,5 x 1,5 ft)

We are actualy doing small cosmetic carbón parts, sized about 0,45 m / 1,5 ft under vacuum with good results.

I´m afraid that making such a big box with our actual process would be a bit scary / non efective.

I feel that we should jump into prepreg or infussion process. We would have to learn and optimeze the new process, which takes time = money.

The pre preg option would be out of autoclave.

Thin laminates, about 3 x 200 gr + 5mm core + 3 x 200 gr carbón / epoxy.
No pinholes nor voids allowed.

I would like to know your opinión / experience about which process to use to reach the most effective and predictable results.

I’ve done epoxy prepregs 95ºC and phenolic prepregs 120ºC before, out of autoclave.

Looking forward to hear your commments. Cheers !

I would go for infusion and use a MTI hose. Biggest change to get no pinholes. If you want to be sure not spending money on a wrong part. Make the first 2 or 3 layers, take it out off the mold and look if it’s good. If you are happy with the result do the other layers. But it’s not that big of an amount of cash you’re saving then. The best way is to make it at once.

Thanks, Michiel.

I would go with infusion for a cosmetic part. This way you can use a clear gel coat and infuse. For out of autoclave pre preg processing it can be very difficult (in my experience) to get a real porosity free finish that can then paint well.

Better to get the part good and glossy straight out of the mould rather than having to spend more time on getting a good finish with paints.

That´s the idea. Ready from the mould !
