Cheap leak detector

Hey Guys,

Just thought I’d share something that worked surprisingly well for me. I’m making a kayak using infusion and was have trouble finding all of the leaks in my bag. Turns out in a 14.5’ mold there can be quite a few leaks  I was able to download a microphone amplifier app for my cell phone and, using a pair a headphones, pretty easily found leaks that I absolutely had no chance of hearing with just my ears.

I found that it was even better if I cut the bottom out of a plastic cup and put that over my phone so I could listen to specific areas.

I don’t know how this forum view about posting third party apps but I found a free one that allowed my to adjust the gain on various frequencies which was very help full.

I know this probably isn’t anywhere near as good as a dedicated ultrasonic detector but it was pretty helpful for my needs.

Cool. Which app?

The one I used was just called “Microphone”. There may be other good ones but I didn’t really check any of the other options out.

Yes, I’m sure the $380 leak detector is better. I was just trying to give some of the more casual hobby level people another option for free.

Bought one and sold it, not worth the money. Small leaks you won’t find, it’s better to buy a good vacuum film.

Totaly agree with Michiel… same experience, small leaks won´t find !!
