Cheap HVLP Gun?

Hi Everybody,
Does anybody have any recommendations for a cheap HVLP gun for spraying polyester resin and gelcoat?

This one is on sale at Harbor Freight for $24.99. (Item 46719)

I was thinking about drilling out the tip and giving it a whirl, but I want to see if anybody has any previous experience/better ideas?

get one or two of those and try to find a 2.2-2.5mm cap and tip on ebay.
they work great but you deffinately have to do alittle trial and error

I think I drilled mine too big, I get drippage when the trigger is released. Try and get the gun when it’s on sale for $9.99 if you can wait.

is your needle lubed?? errr

Yeah, the trigger releases fine when I let go of it. I just overdrilled.

Since these are “precision” Harbor Freight instruments, when you over drill the hole, it doesn’t match the diameter of the needle even though it returns all the way to the closed position.

Or maybe my gun just isn’t as precision as I thought!

Just get a gel coat cup gun.
And why are you spraying polyester resin?

Drilling out the air cap and fluid nozzle of a spray gun, without having a needle to suit, is probably going to mean poor atomisation and dripping is always going to be a problem.

I found a reasonble HVLP gun on Ebay that came with 3 different set ups (inc a 2.5mm), for about £30 delivered to UK from Germany.

There was another thread where we were talking about gelcoat atomization out of these guns and I concluded that I don’t have a problem with it. As for the dripping, I just need to manually push the trigger forward and it stops. So far it’s been $10 well spent:rolleyes: Better than buying a gelcoat gun and finding out I don’t like it. But if anyone has one I can borrow to try out…let me know!
