CF Trunk

I was thinking about making a carbon fiber trunk for my car, but I kept reading the forums and got more confused :\

My trunk is fairly flat and has a small straight bend of like 60 degrees in it thats only 4’’ long after the bend. Could I use the original trunk lid as a “plug” or do I have to make a mold out of it? The bottom of the trunk has the support pieces and many holes in it for spoilers/wires/etc and is made out of aluminum. Should I just overlay the carbon fiber on top of the trunk?

I’m not really looking for weight savings, its just that my trunk is unpainted right now and it looks like a nice alternative to driving around with a primered trunk. Would it be fine to overlay the carbon fiber on top of the paint, or primer?

Seems like I’m asking too many questions, but how does CF hold up under the sun, or does it depend on the epoxy used? My friends have carbon fiber hoods and they get small sun damage spots on them after a few months…

It’s kind of involved if you want to go and make a replacement trunk. It wouldn’t be a good first project in my opinion. So I guess the next best thing is to overlay your stock trunk with carbon. I think the System Three SB112 should do the trick since it’s strong and UV resistant. You’ll be doing a lot of post finishing work though but it’s not impossible.

I’ve got two trunks, so it wouldn’t matter too much if I messed it up. The one I’d work on has spoiler holes still, would using bodyfiller on those holes be bad for the resin or anything?

Do you want to keep the holes or no?

No. I’m planning on shaving the third brake light too.

Just use bondo or something and cover them up.
