Carbon wraping - the method

Hey guys , do you know what they spray on the carbon fiber at 2:05
for holding pattern in place? is it probably laquer or resin?

In next few minutes a guy use this sheet of carbon and wrap around parts using a hot air blower, is it some kind of special resin?

I am thinking he is spraying on resin on the part, and the fabric. Then it’s a semi-preg. He then starts wrapping the part and using the heat gun to soften the resin, or making it tacky so it sticks. After that, I’m not sure…wrapping it in plastic, and then putting it in a rubber mold, and then vacuum bag. After he takes it out, not sure why, but the part has NO wrinkles, and it’s not glossy. He carries it to the machinist, and suddenly they are full gloss. They missed showing a step!!!

it’s like they are just overlaying a plastic part, and that’s it. Pretty cheap if you ask me!!!

Hi guys, i’ve also been asking myself tons of questions around this video, hopefully someone will come to the rescue:bigsmile:

It is an overlay.

The carbon is a prepreg. the guy is pulling hard on the twill carbon, and it does not give at all. Something you do not achieve even when spraying resin or glue on the backside.

I also think the sprayable material is glue, and the prepreg has hardly any tack.

The guy is rubbing a valley in the part several times. If it was dry fiber, guess how it would look… Also, there is a box of prepreg sitting somewhere in the first part of the movie (at 1:"00 or so)

I do not really get the oven part. Do they use vacuum at all? Do not really think so. I like the plastic wrap. Protects the silicone former from contamination, but the part must look like **** when it comes out. Afterwards they must be spray painting it several times before it is presentable.
