I wanted to show you guys some pictures from the carbon fuel tank I made for my Gsxr 750 k7. My first one was not great because off a reaction with my coating. So I had to sand it down to the carbon to fix it and it turned out well. It weights 1700 gram in total with tank cab and the original tank weights 4300 gram whitout tank cab. This is with a aluminium fitting at the bottom for the fuel pump. I thought that can be lighter as the tank is for myself so I made one off 1300 gram. I made them with infusion and applied a fuel resistant resin at the inside. The carbon fabric I used was a pain in the ass as it deformed with a slight touch.
Very nice work!
Me likey!
Thanx
Me to
nice one!! Hats off to u!!
That is cool… Nice one…
That looks fantastic
Thanx guys !
Looks great
Bet you get lots of other bikers wanting you to make the same for them.
Great work. I have a question though. How did you bond all the metal fittings into the composite?
The screwthreads inside with some glue and some fiberglas over it, so it doesn’t makes contact with the carbon. The one you see on the outside is with glue. The next tank I will make somewhere in the future will be a different story. This one was a good learning proces.
is fuel resistant the same as fuel proof or is it going to go through in time. Just curious as to if gas would eat resin away
Yes it is fuel proof / resistant, so no leaks after some time.
Except if you have ethanol in you fuel. Might be able to barrier with a poly sulfide aerospace sealer. Need to check with a manufacturer to be certain.
Great looking tank!
Would love to see you molds and tooling. What resin did you use? Any post cure?
Ethanol is a killer… I use a base phenol novolac resin from a UK source and they supply it to the US for motorsport where ethanol and methanol is used in race fuels a lot more than here in the UK
I do not have ethanol crap in my fuel here so I don’t have to worry about that, but as far as I can see it’s ethanol resistant.
