Carbon fibre worktops?

I’m thinking that carbon fibre worktops would look pretty slick and not cost the Earth. The plan is to wrap some chipboard in carbon fibre, much the same as worktops are normally wrapped in vinyl.

Does anyone know of a British firm that can do this for me? I don’t have a workshop.

Thanks

Not English, but Susho here on the forum could do it. (Netherlands)

Hi
You can contact me at carbonfibreworks@aol.com and I am in the uk.

Hi DCWT,

I don’t want to tread on carbonworks toes, but you can also contact me at derek@carboncactus.co.uk to open up your options.

Thanks,
Dez

Hate to burst your ideal bubble, but it will cost the earth MORE to make it from carbon fiber, than wood. Wood is renewable, and nothing (sans the 0.0002% use of bio resins in the world) in the list of carbon fiber table tops would be “green.”

That being said. What exactly are you looking for? What kind of work would be done on the table…that would specify what resin you need, and thickness of the top.

Hi riff42
When he says cost the earth he is not being an eco warrior, just referring to the cost in monetary terms

Thanks all. I’ll be in touch shortly. Been a busy day. Cheers.

Ah…yeah…in THAT case. Carry on.

I would make one on a melamine board. Melamine board (usually) has that nice microstructure, which prevents too much scratching.

Wax the melamine, infuse a layer of carbon and bulk up with glass. Then a piece of plywood, the desired thickness, and more glass. That should do the trick.

That said, I used to have HDPE faced workbenches. Great, as nothing sticks to it.

I’m not looking to bid for a job or anything, but you can do it and keep it reasonable.

We even did something similar to the floor in my own home.

Apologies for the colossal pictures. I’m not sure as to why they aren’t automatically resizing.

Very nice! I like the floor Idea!

I’ve got better pics somewhere else. We surrounded it with 18" marble tile.

Wow, they look awesome. How does the surface rate in terms of scratch and stain resistance? I probably should have started with that question

interesting last table. I love the idea!

We used a 2:1 table top epoxy, so once it fully cured it wasn’t an issue at all.

I’ve got a 65# boxer and a wife who likes high, high heels. It’s got some scuffs on it, but nothing that doesn’t buff out.

I’m still a bit confused about the purpose for a CF benchtop… it’s just for the bling, right?

You know you can get CF pattern benchtop laminates?

That one is available in a high gloss. I have one in my bathroom that is a matte finish.
