Hi everyone, I might be in need of a roll (100 yards) 3K twill 2X2 5.9oz 50" width carbon fiber and so far the cheapest I have found is $19.25 a yard ($1925 a roll) at soller composites. does anyone know if I can find it any cheaper somewhere else?
Thank you
Bryan
definately not a bad price today.
Fiber type? AS2C? Pretty good price.
That’s a real good price. Especially since their CF is manufactured from the US.
Call Fiberglast and see what kind of price they give you on 5.7oz 2x2. I urge you to! Here is their number… 1.800.838.8984
Sorry, but Fiberglast is a totally ripped off, they overcharge on everything.
I say go with soller not because of price but because it would support the small guy
I have been purchasing from these guys for many years, I am a small lightweight Outrigger, Ski and Canoe maker, they stock most std. weaves 50" - 30" rolls and they will make specials runs for you if you have a special weight and weave requirement, one roll if you ask them nicely, they will also sell smaller amounts so talk to Michael Heaton - ‘mheaton@comcast.net’ - or go to their website - http://www.teamtextiles.com/ Woonsocket US, very helpful people and a great price also.
Good Luck

Does anyone care about fiber type in their carbon cloth or is price the overriding factor?
We care about fiber type, depending on what we are making or the process, now we look for carbon fiber with higher Density pics weaves)/inch 14x14 or 17x17. Most other supplies offer discount for the more you buy at 5 Yards ,10 Yards, 25 Yards, 50 Yards or full roll price. If remembering correctly the last time I call you guys at AVT, you do not offer that, you just get a discount at 100 yard roll. I’m speaking for me that carbon fiber I got from you guys that last time was a lot different then what I’m use to getting from you either the tow or weight is different, so it not to my liking.
Interesting as we tried selling a fabric made with AS2c, which is a Hexcel fiber. Out of our customers only 3 noticed the difference. (at least those that let us know). That fiber is significantly cheaper than other fibers. We are not using that fiber now,as other fibers have now reduced their cost, but all I see is people talking about price which would favor AS2c. All the inexpensive fabric I have seen uses Hexcel fiber. Hence the question. Fiber density is typically 12.5 x 12.5. Some is 13 x13 anything else is special weaves or surplus. The fiber type will make a large difference in perceived quality. 14x 14? where?
Soller Composites have 14x14 and 17x17

Just used the 17x17 8oz 270gsm for some wrapped parts and love that I had no gaps between the weave unlike most of the 12x12 I have use before.
So you are using the increased density of a non standard weave to band aid the fiber type?
If you simply want quality carbon fiber at a good price go to Sollar. They have ALWAYS taken care of me no matter how big or small my order. Their 5.7 oz carbon fiber has never dissapointed me. I’ve ordered 200 or so yards from them in the past few years.
Since the start of this year I switched to a 6oz weave for a different direction we are going so I don’t order from them anymnore, but if I had to go back to 5.7 I’d go straight to them.
They used to be weavers so they do know what they are talking about when it comes to carbon fiber :). Not only that, each employee that works there is a partner in the company. They all equally care about the quality of their products as well as their customer service. You will be taken care of I promise you.
I am glad the 17x17 is working for your overlay work. Do you know or care what the fiber type is?
everything I make is cosmetic, I could care less about type…I want good looks, easy workability and not easy to blow gaps in the weave.
For most people it shouldnt matter. Of course that come with the territory, you find a fabric that wets out well, works into molds well and doesnt pull apart when you look at it and you stay with it.
So you do care about fiber type. All the properties you listed are directly related to the type of fiber. But I suppose the real question is do you care enough to inquire about what type is in the fabric as you are shopping for material?
I totally agree with you hybridracers, most of my parts I offer are the same, also AVT you are one of the only companies that does not give an discount for the more you buy except for a FULL roll.
Ill be honest, I dont know any of the technical terms for all the types of fiber. Ive been out of the loop for a couple years due to schooling and have taken a hiatus…when I used carbon you just bought 5.7oz 2x2 twill or whatever weave you like.
So for me? No…but trust that if I find the cloth to be damaged or crappy to work with, that sale will be a two time deal…once for me and the second to confirm the problem. Then Ill never buy again.
Fair enough and I appreciate the input. When you get really bored sometime (and I mean REALLY) you should try some different fiber types with the standard weaves. It can be amazing how different the fabric can get.
can you discuss some of the differences of the fibers and how the prices vary with these differences?
Thanks.
