Carbon Fiber Corvette Grand Sport engine cover

These are a set of stock plastic engine covers that are having the lettering filled in and flattened out so that some carbon can be over laid and the “Grand Sport” logo can be painted on as well.

Some more pics

Those will look good in carbon.

Wanna do my LS7 covers? Looks great!

I think these are going to be a regular item Ill be making. But Ill have to check on a couple things before I tell anyone that I can do theirs too.

Here is the grand finale. Man these look like crap. Oh well… Maybee some day Ill get this whole carbon fiber thing figured out. Untill then, enjoy these polished turds.

Not too shabby there is a guy that did a pair of grand sports in corvette forum that turned out good or his first time doing overlays.

Only think is some grand sports and zo6 like I have is there is no oil cap cut out on the covers… So it’s a different part all together. But… They do look pretty good. I imagine the carbon was tricky to lay in there eh?

Indeed it is. I lay in a separate piece and then trim it back down to the original part with an exacto knife. It takes a steady hand and a couple years of slicing way too far into parts and fingers until you get good at this technique. I have tried to teach it to others I have worked with, but it is quite difficult.

I think they look pretty dang good.
Couple questions for you.

  1. What is the grey line separating the different pieces of fabric?
  2. Did you clear coat over the decals and are they vinyl?
    Thanks

The grey is paint, Cyber Grey, its the color of the car these are going on.
The lettering is painted on as well. We lay down a vinyl stencil, paint on the letters, then peel up the stencil. Then it gets clear coted.

Causing quit a stir on the corvette boards I see! Nice work man!

What kind of resin are you using to withstand the engine bay heat?
