Cannot use gelcoat on epoxy

I finnaly found company in norway were i can buy some composit materials. I bougt 6 KG of expoy, thats about 14LBS. The price was 240USD, when i compare it to the prices you have in the states that was insain. I also bought 6 yards of 12OZ woven glassfiber math, and the total price for 6 yards was 100USD.

The company i bought it from said i coudnt not use gelcoat with this since it did not bond to it?

The brand is West Systems, do you got that in the states?

Gelcoat usually refers to a polyester based “surface coat”.You can not mix a polyester with an epoxy. it will not bond sufficiently.
You will have to buy an epoxy Surface Coat.

Did you locate the supplier through the boat company?

Yes, West Systems is available in the US and is usually one of the most expensive epoxies offered.

This company sells composite supplies in the Netherlands:

This is a link to a supplier in Norway. The are distributers
for Hexcel and Hunstman (formerly Ciba), and many others.
Give them a try. Funny enough it is easier to get these brands
in the EU than in the US. They only want to deal in truck loads
in the US. in Europe they are happy to sell a couple of kilos.

Good Luck

I have successfully used a 50/50 mix of clear poly gel coat with Duratec high gloss additive laid into the mold first then epoxy resin the fabric. I think the point that people are raising, just to be clear, it that you will only get a mechanical bond between the two since they are dissimilar (i.e., there will not be any chemical cross linking). I have not had any problems with separation since most epoxies have a pretty high adhesion rate. I typically let the clear coat cure before beginning the lay up.

So to get the surface smooth i should just lay a 'thick
layer of epoxy before i lay the glasfiberwoven math?
