calculating resin/hardener required for part

Is there a formula to calculate how much resin i will require for making a certain part from a mould for example if i had a 1m by 1m bonnet/hood, using 3 layers for 300gsm? I see these videos of people mixing resin and putting into a bucket they start the resin and always have enough id be afraid of starting and then suddenly starting to run out on the larger parts.

Thanks

well it only takes a second to mix up a new batch of poly…at the same time, I always mix more than i suspect I will need especially when working with epoxy so I know I wont run out. You can always weigh it based on the expected resin/fabric ratio on the part once you determine the amount of fabric you will be using…

Other than that, experience!

best rule of thumb is too mix up the same weight as your total fabric, this will give you atleast 10% more then you will need but when doing wetlayup it is hard to keep a low content of resin, excess gets vacuumed out.

for smaller infused parts I’ll mix up about 50% resin weight to cloth weight. 100ml to 200gm
I dont even measure for most of my stuff though anymore as I just know what takes what now

thanks all, thats what i saw before, same weight as fabric roughly will give me a little more to play with. Does most people now spray clear gelcoat in the mould before layup?

Thanks again

well, you can’t judge that easily for infusion, cause the resin left in the tubes and feed point etc, is a lot…

well thats why I said smaller parts. Ones that don’t require long lengths of tubing etc etc
Although, if you are doing larger parts over and over again I bet you’d get the mix qty’s pretty close everytime
