bonding to polycarbonate

Hi,

I have a customer whose suitcase made of polycarbonate has a crack. He asked if it would be possible to do a functional fix. I thought about just laminating some CF over the inside but I doubt laminating epoxy (Larit L-385 is what I use) would bond very well. Can someone recommend any thing that would give a good strong hold to PC? I would prefer something for a secondary bond.

Thanks
Kevin

PER/VER might work. We have large sheets of plexi, which I think is polycarbonate, and if using VER, the pexi melts a bit from the styrene. So, you might get away with a good bond by melting the plastic slightly. Just be careful not to warp the front. Maybe one or 2 layers max.

A litle bit of acetone in the epoxi will also help to bond epoxy to polycarbonate.

What about some Plexus adhesive it seems to stick to just about anything and gives a strong bond.

Yes, the 3940 and 3940LH are specifically for polycarbonate (and the new transparent/clear 685 as well).

However, these glues are impossible to laminate with.

Hi,

thanks for the feedback. I’ll order some of the plexus stuff and see how it works.

Make sure you read the product safety data sheet some of the Plexus adhesives are quiet nasty and may require the use of a respirator and good workshop ventilation.
