Bonding a 2-Part Mold

I have a mold that will be 2 parts, that will bond together to create a part with a hollow inner section. Since the mold is 2 parts, I’ll have flanged sections to trim off from both halves when finishing the part. If I create a solid glue line right up against the inner most part of the flanged area, would that create a sufficient bond line when bonding the 2 halves? The part thickness will only be around 2mm, so the butt joint is thin. If I can create a solid bead of glue, the bond line should be solid around the entire 2mm butt joint after trimming.

Would this work well? Or is there a better way to do this?

depends on a lot of things …

but i would say no , its not going to be very strong, and you might even end up with sections that dont even bond

you need to do an overlap , is there a section on the mold that you can cut out to gain access the inside of it ? cause then you do an overhang of the fabric and using a roller you flatten out the overlap once the mold is closed

if you cant gain access , you can use what known as a joggle gasket and make each half separate and then join, this makes a step in the part to allow for an overlap

you can also use an inflation bladder to press the fabric down

Can you post a photo of what you’re making?

It’s an automotive spoiler, I make them often. The problem is that I typically don’t mold them to create a closed part. This one is different…I’ll try and get pic.

  • 1 joggle gasket.

In that case, another +1 for joggle gasket.
