Bike Monocoque

Hey, I’m about to make a tail monocoque for my CBR RR and I wanted to hear what you guys suggest. The idea is to remove the subframe and all the rest that arent necessary for track days, reduce the weight & lower the center of gravity of the bike, max weight of the monocoque shouldn’t be more than 1,5kg.

How many layers of carbon, also should I use core within the layers or just carbon will support my weight and vibrations?

This doesnt give you the exact answers you’re after, but it does illustrate how Thorsten Durbahn fashioned his carbon sub frame for an SP1.

this is a serious coincidence… I just bought some metal bits to start this exact same project. Same bike too maybe 900RR or 600RR? I’ve got a '99 900RR project I’m working on.

Thanks, usefull pics, thought I’m more concerned whether I should use core material or just enough layers of carbon. The procedure will be vacuum bag with epoxy resin.

the monocoque I’m about to make is for a 600RR 03

I would definitely use some sort of core. As for the number of layers… I haven’t gotten that far, but check out the engineering stickies canyon has made in the “engineering talk” section.

I wish I still had my '95 CBR900RR… that bike was so much fun and it fit me perfectly. Just a heavy bike.

I just made a carbon subframe for a rc51. We have made two proto types…one using 8-10 plys and the other using 8 plys with a core material… You shouldnt need that many for the main part of the tail but we felt that we neeeded that many to support the riders weight for the sub frame.

wow, 8-10 plys??? that’s a lot of material!!! would it be possible to post few pics? weight?
Actually I was thinking that the tail monocoque I’m gonna built will be made as an ordinary tail with extra layers around the driver seat area and where the tail bolts on the frame

Oh that ain’t nothing. The super yacht winches we make have 60 layers of 600gsm UD carbon, but then it does have a test load of 35 000kg.
