basalt fabrics

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I couldnt find a way to search it.

I would like to know more about basalt fabrics, has anyone used it. what can it be compared to and where I could get a test sample of it. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

All I know is, it’s very expensive, and doesn’t work well with Goodrich’s Fyrerock material. I think it’s fiberglass like.

Basalt is mainly used for its wider temperature range, and its better chemical resistance. Or of course its (attractive?) brown-black colour.

Price should be just above glass.

For sources: You could try JB Martin in Canada.

They’re expensive and relatively hard to find consistent supplies (Canada). I’ve used both basalt sleeves and stitched fabrics. As hard to cut as carbon fiber and very friable. Taping cuts highly recommended. It’s very light and will float in resin so a vacuum or closed mold is recommended.

hey thanks guys. I just got a peice of it today. its almost feels like lightweight glass, pretty intersting.
