Basalt Fabrics and suppliers

As the title suggests, the top of this thread is Basalt. Has anyone here used the fabric before? what issues have you encountered/ what did you like?

The bronze-ish gold colour of the material is alluring and im wondering why most suppliers dont carry it. does anyone know someone who does?

The bronze colour sort of disappears once it has been wet out. You can tell it’s not carbon fibre, but any passer-by looking at it probably wouldn’t notice a difference at all. I’ve attached an image of a little test piece I made using basalt. Notice the edges still look brown because they don’t have any backing layers behind, but the rest is darker where it is thicker.

There’s nothing wrong with it, but for me it’s just an expensive fibreglass. It costs me more than carbon due to buying carbon in bulk, but it doesn’t have the performance properties for me to warrant buying it in bulk.

I see what you mean by it looking similar… I had thought that it retains its original look. I know of one company that sells it here in Toronto but like you said, it’s expensive fiberglass whichs makes carbon the better choice.

Basalt can be good choice in back layup but it will never looks like carbon fiber.
You can have good price with high quantity demand, sometime ago we had offer:
1000sqm of the UD 200g/sqm which is 3,7euro/sqm
